Enrichment Programs

Enrichment programs are "hands-on, hands-in" programs designed to give students a unique learning experience about the history of farming and rural life in Iowa. All enrichment programs require 3 adults, (teacher plus two additional adults), admitted free of charge. A maximum of 6 adults is allowed.

Programs at the Historic Farm Sites
These "hands-on, hands-in" programs are designed to give students a unique learning experience about the history of farm life in Iowa.

1900 Farm Sampler
Available November - December and February - April
The 1900 Farm Sampler is a customizable program that allows your group to get hands-on and focus on a specific educational theme, while learning about turn-of-the-century Iowa farm life. Choose from one of two options, or call to discuss other options.
Time:  2 hours
Students (Min/Max):  12/20
Cost: $6.50 per student

Choose between:

     Farm Power: Participate in activities that require different types of power- human, animal, wind, water and fire.
     Food for the Table: Explore how farm families produced, prepared, and preserved food for the table.
 
1900 Farm Hired Hands
Available November - December and February - April
Students participate in morning or afternoon chores at the 1900 Horse-Powered Farm. This includes cooking a snack on the wood-burning stove, doing laundry, and doing various farm-related chores. This program includes a horse-drawn wagon ride to the 1900 Farm. Dates for this extremely popular program go fast so reserve your spot early!
Grades: 2-8

1850 Farm Hired Hands
Available October-November and March-April
What was life like for new farmers in Iowa? Students visit the log house, barn and see all of the farm animals—oxen, sheep, chickens and pigs. They help with morning or afternoon chores, bake a snack in the hearth and do seasonal activities appropriate for 1850.

Programs in 1875 Town of Walnut Hill
These "hands-on, hands-in" programs are designed to give students a unique learning experience about the history of rural life in Iowa. All enrichment programs require 3 adult chaperones (teacher plus two additional adults), admitted at no charge. 

A Visit to Town

Available October-December and February-April
Ideal for middle school and junior high students! Discover the types of businesses, services and homes that are found in a typical Iowa frontier town. Experience how changing technology impacts the goods and services available to townspeople through hands-on activities. Students spend time in three different town sites.
Grades: 4-8
Time: 3 hours
Cost: $8.50 per student

A Visit to A One-Room School
Available October-December and February-April
Spelling bees, recitation, reading from McGuffey Readers and arithmetic problems on a slate are lessons students will participate in when they visit the one-room schoolhouse. Compare and contrast today’s classroom with that of our 1875 school.
Grades: 4-6
Time: 2 hours, morning or afternoon
Cost: $4.00 per student

A Visit to the Flynns
Available October 27 - November 20, 2009 ONLY
How did the Victorians live? Spend some time at the Flynn House and learn about the daily life of a wealthy farm family and their domestic help. This hands-on program is loaded with activities and information about the Victorian era!
Grades: 3-6
Time: 3 hours
Cost $8.50 per student
