Living History Farms is an open-air, historical educational non-profit museum, situated on 500 acres of land in Urbandale, Iowa.  Its mission is to tell the story of Midwestern agriculture and rural life. 

Position Descriptions
General Information:
•    Schedule can be negotiated, but generally hours will occur when the business office is open, Monday through Friday, between 8:30 – 4:30.  An occasional night or weekend might be necessary.
•    These positions are open throughout the year, and are available immediately.
•    Training will be provided.
•    The student is responsible for ensuring that the internship fits into their individual program of study.
•    Positions are un-paid.

General qualifications:    (positions may have other specific qualifications)
•    Excellent communication skills
•    Willingness to learn, and a “can do” attitude
•    Ability to work independently
•    Experience with standard computer software for a work environment, such as Power Point, Excel, Word, etc.
•    Creative, with analytical and problem – solving skills
•    Enjoy working with the public

Marketing            Open to sophomores and above

    Put your creativity to work as you assist the Marketing department “get the word out” about Living History Farms through a variety of mediums.  This position will assist with creating membership newsletters, designing special event posters, photographing special events, staffing publicity booths, working with visiting camera crews, assisting with web site maintenance, assisting with web site design and more!
    Specific qualifications sought:  experience with photoediting software & design software; photography experience, design background
    Majors: marketing, communications, journalism, graphic design, web design/programming, English, etc.

Development        Open to sophomores and above

    Delve into the world of resource development as you learn what it takes to raise funds for a non-profit organization.  Through a project-based approach, interns will learn what it takes to apply for grants, work with donors, and track projects from start to finish within the context of a strategic plan.  
    Majors:  business, marketing, journalism, management, business, English, history, or to anyone interested in working in a non-profit environment

Museum/Non-Profit Management    Open to juniors and seniors

     Intrigued by what it takes to manage a non-profit organization?  This intern will assist the President of Living History Farms and other department administrators with a multitude of projects. 
     Majors:  management, business administration, finance, history, or similar interest/major

Special Events        Open to sophomores and above

    Special events provide Living History Farms an opportunity to serve the community through unique, fun, family-friendly programming.  Interns will assist with the planning, design, execution, supervision, and evaluation of special event programming.  In particular, an intern is sought to assist with the museum’s extremely popular Halloween event in October 2010.
    Majors/interests:  recreation, event planning, leisure studies,

Finance and Visitor Services    Open to sophomores and above

    The visitor is the key to what we do at Living History Farms!  Interns are needed to help with all aspects of the finance and visitor services department.  Projects include, but are not limited to, the following: conducting a fixed-asset inventory, researching food service rules and regulations, records conversion, and web commerce.
    Majors:  business, finance, accounting, restaurant management, recreation, visitor services, or similar majors

Historical Clothing Construction and Research    Open to juniors and seniors

    This will appeal in particular to those who want more experience with clothing design and production in a museum or theatre setting.  Living History Farms provides period-appropriate clothing to its staff that work at the historic sites.  This intern will work on constructing clothing from period patterns. 
    Specific qualifications:  excellent basic sewing skills
    Majors:  theatre, family and consumer science

Volunteer Program Management    Open to sophomores and above

    Wonder what it takes to manage a volunteer program at a non-profit organization?  Then find out by working with LHF’s Coordinator of Volunteer Services on a variety of projects. 
    Majors:  management, history, museum studies, visitor services, non-profit management, or similar interest/major
